AITO - Association of Independent Tour Operators

AITO logo AITO gets mentioned quite a lot in my lists. This is deliberate. AITO member companies - there are around 140 of them - are typically small (often family-run) specialist tour operators who really know their niche or destination.

As opposed to the large mainstream tour operators who (usually) offer high quality but rather standard holiday experiences, AITO operators tend to have unique and exclusive properties (hotels/villas), tours, excursions and experiences. Indeed when they grow to become successful brands with loyal customers, many of these small specialist companies get approached and bought up by the large operators who want some of the action!

Best of all, AITO companies come with full 100% consumer financial protection. AITO ensures that all holidays - including 'accommodation only' - its members operate are protected either through its own government approved bonding scheme (the AITO Trust) or through other schemes such as ATOL or ABTA. This means that in the event of an AITO tour operator failing, any money paid in advance to the member for a holiday will be refunded or if you are on holiday at the time of the failure you may complete the holiday.

This is not a travel agency

This is not a traditional directory (nobody can pay to get listed)

Travel-Lists is a set of independent lists you can browse for your travel research

How to navigate the listings

All my lists are arranged either by Destination or Category.

Girl backpacker with map, pointing left

Use the menus on the left to drill down.

I list firstly, British tour operators or specialist travel agents who feature that Destination or offer that Category of holiday/travel/excursion/attraction/service.

For many destinations and holiday types I also list a few local travel providers and accommodation.

There are holes (lot's of em!). Not every destination is covered nor every activity/service.

Exchange Links Policy

I don't do them - sorry

The only criteria for being listed in this directory is whether I think my visitors should know about your organisation. That means reviewing your website, which means that if I don't find you myself, you need to submit for review.

It is not too hard to get into my directory (88.8% of submissions are successful) but it is absolutely impossible to get in by offering an exchange link.

If you send an email requesting an exchange link you will simply not get a reply. Nothing personal, but all 'Exchange Link' emails are deleted on sight every day.
