We consider this to be bad practise. For all but the simplest travel products (eg. 'city pair' flights) you should research online but always book by phone.
To be fair, at the moment the majority of 'phone fine' companies are airlines and ferry operators who sell the exactly the kind of simple travel components that can be bought online without too much problem, but we believe this is not a trend to be encouraged.
