These are low-cost airline websites and reservations numbers for UK travellers.

(When is an airline not an airline? Sometimes operators using chartered aircraft promote themselves as if they are a no-frills airline. For us, an 'airline' is only an airline if it has its name painted on the fuselage.)


Aer Arann Express 00 353 1 814 5250 Low cost flights from Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Luton, Manchester & Southampton to Cork, Galway & Waterford.
Air Berlin 0870 738 88 80 Europe's third largest low-cost-carrier was voted one of the top three European short haul airlines, in the Observer/Guardian annual travel industry awards, May 2004. In the UK, Air Berlin operates out of Stansted to 12 cities in Spain, six in Germany as well as to Budapest, Milan, Vienna and Zurich. It offers low-cost prices but complimentary service includes seat reservation at check-in as well as a snack, drinks and a newspaper available on the flight.

Blue 1 0870 60 727 727 Finnish carrier that launched a low-cost service between Stansted & Helsinki in March 06. Part of the SAS group.
bmi Baby 0870 264 2229 Low-cost subsidiary of bmi British Midland.
Clickair 00 800 254 25247 Spanish low-cost airline (based in Barcelona) launched in 2006. They fly from Gatwick to Seville, Bilbao & Vigo, from Heathrow to La Corunna & Valencia, and from Edinburgh to Barcelona. Clickair operates a 24-strong fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft.
easyJet 0870 6000 000 The original UK low-cost airline
FlyBe 0870 567 6676 Once Jersey European Airways (JEA), then British European (BE), now re-invented as a regional low-cost carrier.
FlyGlobespan 08705 561522 No frills airline launched Nov 2002 by the Globespan Group (travel agents and tour operator to Canada) operating scheduled services from Glasgow Prestwick International airport to Palma, Nice, Rome and Malaga
GermanWings 020 8321 7255 Low cost German airline flying from stansted to Cologne/Bonn
Helvetic 020 7026 3464 Swiss budget airline flying from Luton to Zurich, where it connects to a network serving 18 European destinations.
Iceland Express 0870 8500 737 Low fares carrier operating daily scheduled flights between Iceland, Denmark and the UK.
Jet2 0871 226 1737 Low cost airline operating to 16 European destinations from Leeds Bradford, 16 from Manchester, five from Belfast International and two from Newcastle.
Meridiana 020 7839 2222 Italian airline flying from London to Florence, and Olbia on Sardinia
NIKI n/a Austrian low-cost airline set up in 2003 by Niki Lauda having sold his previous airline to Austrian Airlines. NIKI is a partner of Air Berlin and operates flights to the UK (Stansted-Vienna) under AB flight numbers.
Norwegian.no n/a Low-cost Norwegian airline flying into Stansted
Ryanair 0871 246 0000 One of the two big players in the UK/Eire low-cost airline business
ScotAirways 0870 6060 707 Low-cost flight between Dundee, Edinburgh, London City, Southampton & Amsterdam.
SkyEurope 020 7365 0365 Low-cost Central European airline flying from London to its bases in Bratislava, Budapest, Warsaw & Krakow. Onward connections to a network of 73 routes to 37 destinations in 19 European countries.
SmartWings +420 255 700 827 Low-cost Czech airline flying from Gatwick to Prague.
Thompson Airways 0870 1900 737 Thompson Holidays' no-frills airline, ThompsonFly launched in spring 2004 and more recently merged with First Choice Airways, now rebranded Thomson Airways. Its planes fly to destinations round the world from 23 UK airports.
TUIfly.com n/a Pound signSister airline to Thomson Airways, in that they have the same parent - TUI. TUIfly.com is one of Germany’s biggest low cost carriersand flies from airports such as Edinburgh, Manchester, and Newcastle to a variety of popular European destinations.
Wizz Air 00 48 22 500 9499 Polish low-cost airline launched May 2004 with services from Katowice in southern Poland near Krakow to Berlin, Rome, Milan and London Luton. They plan to add Gdansk in northern Poland and Budapest Ferihegy airport in Hungary on 24 June.

Notes: *WhichBudget.com is a useful directory of low-cost flights. Put in your start point, eg Lyon, and you'll find that you can fly to Dublin Beirut or Pristina on Snowflake via their base in Copenhagen.
*Lowcost.com is a useful site that enables you to lookup which low cost carriers (if any) fly between any two named airports

*flycheap0.com is an excellent online guide to low-cost airlines and their routes in Europe. It has a complete list of all routes that is updated automatically throughout the day. The site was launched a year ago (Feb 05) and has just been updated to make it more user-friendly.
*Dohop.com is a new (April 05) online budget airline trip planner. Unlike the fare-checker websites, dohop is not searching for lowest fares, just best routes/options.
