There are a number of modern design budget hotels springing up, some of them based on the Japanese 'capsule hotel' model, some of them catering for very short stay use (rented by the hour), and all of them aimed at specific budget users. This is a list of those we think fit into that category. | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| easyHotel | Budget hotels with clean no-frills rooms created by Stelios Haj-Ioannou (he prefers now to be known simply as 'Stelios'), the easyGroup chairman and founder. There is one in London, one in Basel and three more on the way (2 London 1, Budapest). They are aimed at business and leisure travellers who just want somewhere to sleep and use the money they save for other things. | ||||
| Etap | Budget brand already established on the continent by the hotel giant Accor. But they have now opened the first 'new generation' design Etap hotel in the UK (Birmingham), which has stylish but basic en-suite rooms designed for flexible use with a bunk bed suspended over a double bed (perfect for families) and 24-hour check-in machines (aimed at business travellers). | ||||
| Qbic | Stylish design budget hotels due to open Spring 2007 in the centre of Antwerp and the Amsterdam World Trade Centre. The hotels have cube shaped living spaces sold on the Internet and aimed at "a new generation of travellers, who wish to temporarily escape the pace and noise of the city". | ||||
| Yotel | Airport hotels created by Simon Woodroffe, the founder of the YO! Sushi restaurant chain, and expected to open in spring 2007 at Gatwick and Heathrow. The design is a cross between Japanese capsule hotels and British Airway's first class and is aimed at travellers, perhaps delayed or transfering who need a private space for a few hours. They offer small but luxurious 'cabins' in 4-hour blocks. | ||||

| Research Tips: | * | Maybe not in the budget category, base-2-stay is a new generation hotel in Kensington. It's a stylish design mix of modern boutique (white walls, flatscreen tvs, power showers, etc) and aparthotel, in that each room has a cupboard sized kitchenette. |
| * | Being a hostel, Piccadilly Backpackers also falls just outside our list definition, but is installing 700 Japanese pod style capsules across six floors, each of which has been individually and uniquely decorated by upcoming artists and designers from around the world. |
