LIST: ART HOTELS

There is a small but growing number of 'arthotels' around the world where rooms and public spaces are themed, painted, decorated or designed by artists or designers, or which contain unique collections of art and sculpture. These are some of the art hotels that I know about.
21C Museum Hotel Kentucky, USA star90-room boutique hotel in Louisville with artworks by 21st Century living artists, many of which are part of the owner's private collection and were specially commissioned for the hotel, which opened in 2006. It was voted ' best hotel in the United States and sixth-best in the world' in the Conde Nast Traveler’s 2009 Readers Choice Awards (Nov 2009).
Apollo Arthotel Brugges, Belgium A home for regular exhibitions and a mission to support young artists.
Arte Luise Kunsthotel Berlin 50-room hotel and art gallery in the heart of historic Berlin. Each room has been decorated by a renowned artist, and all the public spaces are populated with sculptures and artworks.
Art'otels Various Art'otel is a Park Plaza (£) collection of six hotels - three in Berlin, one each in Postdam, Dresden, & Budapest. "Each art'otel exhibits the works of a contemporary artist. like a museum, it impressively uses the public space of a hotel to present a general perspective of the overall work of one significant artist". There are more on the way: art'otel marrakech (2009), art'otel cologne (2009), art'otel amsterdam (2011) and art'otel london hoxton (2012).
Atelier Sul Mare Sicily starSeafront hotel in Castel di Tusa with a collection of 16 highly-individual artist-designed rooms (my favs are Lunaria and I'm boarding on a paper boat - ed).

DuoMo Rimini, Italy Extraordinary modernistic design hotel by architect & designer Ron Arad, with loads of chrome, fibre optic lighting and sharp colours. Opened 2006.
Henry Jones, The Hobart, Tasmania Claims to be "Australia's first and only pure arthotel". The highly rated contemporary luxury hotel occupies a row of former colonial warehouses on the harbour side and has its own gallery ("art installation") which doubles up as a suite, in one of them.
Hotel de Arts San Francisco Each room at this boutique hotel is a work of art, having been painted by up-and-coming artists. So far 26 of the hotel's 51 rooms have been elevated to 'work of art' status with another ten rooms being completed in 2005.

Null Stern Hotel Teufen, Switzerland The "no-star" hotel is an art installation - an austere hotel created in a nuclear bunker by two Swiss artists. As its rating suggests, it's cheap (around £7.50 a night) and definitely not cheerful (no daylight, no central heating, no carpets or decorations). CNN did a report.
Royal Windsor Hotel Brussels The Royal Windsor Hotel in Brussels has a selection of 12 'Fashion Rooms' designed by some of Begium's most famous fashion designers - Mademoiselle Lucien, Jean-Paul Knott, Gerald Watelet, Marina Yee, Haider Ackermann, Pascale Kervan, Nina Meert, Romy Smits, Kaat Tilley, Nicolas Woit, Xavier Delcour and Christian Wijnants.

Propeller Island City Lodge Berlin starThirty room hotel, each themed differently. There are some spectacular rooms. Your kids will love the Castle room with its fortress-like bed, and depending how you feel about seeing reflections of yourself, you'll love or hate the diamond-shaped Mirror room, covered with mirrors!

Notes
