These are individual hotels, country house hotels, boutique hotels, castles, inns & pubs, B&Bs and other 'accommodations' in Wales that I have come across and think are worth checking out.

Clearly, although subjective, this list is far from comprehensive. As it expands it may be sub-divided down into smaller categories.

Manorhaus 01824 704 830 Manorhaus is a boutique style eight-bedroom townhouse in Ruthin, Vale of Clwyd. Part of the stylish Epoque collection of design hotels. It also has an art gallery and features artworks by professional artists in the rooms.

Portmeirion 01766 770000 Portmeirion is the famously bizarre coastal village estate which was the location for the 1960s TV series The Prisoner. As well as the 17 self-catering cottages available to rent, there are two hotels: the Hotel Portmeirion with 14 rooms in the main building and 26 rooms and suites in the surrounding village, and, on the hill overlooking the village, Castell Deudraeth with 11 contemporary style rooms and suites.

Gliffaes Country House Hotel 01874 730 371 Well-regarded country house hotel in the Brecon Beacons. The Telegraph, Sunday Times and Country Life have all waxed lyrical about it.
Lake Vyrnwy Hotel 01691 870692 Large Victorian country house hotel in 24,000 acres overlooking Lake Vyrnwy and the surrounding countryside (Berwyn Mountains).
The Drawing Room 01982 552493 Describes itself as a 'restaurant with rooms'. Georgian country house (with 5-star restaurant) between Cwmbach and Newbridge-on-Wye, near the Welsh National Showground.

Llys Meddyg 01239 820008 Small and cosy Georgian townhouse with six rooms, formerly the Llys Meddyg - "doctor's place".

  • Wales in Style is an "independently selected guide" of hotels and inns launched in May 06 with support from Visit Wales. It lists high quality properties offering something new and stylish.
  • Welsh Rarebits is a searcheable collection of 50+ small (mostly) independent hotels in Wales. (Many of the hotels on our list also appear on theirs).
